ERIN, Tenn. — Tougher jail standards has caused Houston County to form a committee to find ways to address some deficiencies found at the jail during recent state inspections. County Mayor George Clark called a meeting of County Commissioner and Sheriff Kevin Sugg on Dec. 14 to learn more about the situation from Bob Bass of Tennessee Corrections Institute, which performs inspections of the 131 local jails statewide. “Your jail is in good shape,” he told commissioners while showing photos of deplorable conditions of other facilities in the state. “… You pass on 2014 standards.” Nonetheless, Houston County Jail has its faults in light of new state standards that went into effect last Jan. 1. The major concern was in the area of medical care. Bass explained that TCI performs annual inspections, and jails are allowed time to make corrections, but if no fixes are made, the facility will not be certified as meeting minimum standards.
