Male Diversion Program nearing ready point

“Where is the program to divert males from prison?”

That was the question David Phillips asked himself when he saw the beginning of the Women in Recovery Program in Tulsa District Judge William Kellough’s courtroom.

It was 2009 and Phillips, a Tulsa County assistant public defender assigned to Kellough’s court, saw a program that would be more than a glimmer of hope for the future and freedom for women instead of long prison terms for nonviolent offenses.

The answer to Phillips’ question will be answered in mid-2016 when the Male Diversion Program begins. It will have similar guidelines established by the successful Women in Recovery program, but it will be tailored specifically to men.
