Report: Iowa inmates need more mental health treatment |

A report by a national prisons consultant says the Iowa Department of Corrections has an insufficient system to provide mental health treatment to inmates. The report, by Dr. Thomas White, a consultant with the National Institute of Corrections, comes after the corrections department requested a review in the wake of four suicides at state prisons. White found that there appeared to be no direct connection between the deaths since the inmates each used different methods to kill themselves, were in different units, died at different times and were under supervision of different staff members. But White pointed to a lack of capacity at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center and a shortage of mental health professionals needed to help inmates in the Clinical Care Unit. He says sometimes the only treatment offered to inmates in need of psychotherapy is medication, which inmates don't always take. He says the medication is being overseen by one psychiatrist who "clearly is overtaxed." |
