| Knives, drugs nabbed at Sun City Prison |

A surprise raid by the Department of Corrections’ Emergency Services Team at Johannesburg prison on Tuesday netted cellphones, knives, shanks and drugs. Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla was on hand to witness the raid under Operation Vala (close) in the Medium A, section A1, part of the prison which held awaiting trial prisoners. These are people accused of a crime and have not been able to pay bail or have had bail denied, or have been convicted of a crime but not yet sentenced. “Forty nine escapes were reported last year, compared to 60 in 2013/14 and the majority of these escapees are back behind bars,” Makwetla said.
