| 3 more Mississippi inmate work centers may close including Jackson County site |

JACKSON, Miss. — Facing a tight budget, the head of Mississippi's prison system said Monday that staff shortages may prompt him to close three more inmate community work centers that provide free labor to counties. That would bring the number of closures to five and would leave the state with 12 work centers. Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher said in a news release that work centers in Bolivar and Yazoo counties in the Mississippi Delta, and Jackson County on the Gulf Coast could close in January. Employees would be transferred to other Department of Corrections sites. Fisher closed community work centers in northeast Mississippi's Alcorn County last month, and in Jefferson County, in the southwestern corner of the state, in May. Read More. |
