| ACLU sues NH prisons over ban on cards, drawings |

Civil liberties attorneys are suing the New Hampshire Department of Corrections for preventing prisoners from receiving greeting cards — including Christmas cards — picture postcards and drawings in the mail. “With this sweeping policy, the state has eliminated one of the few ways young children can communicate with parents who are in prison,” said Gilles Bissonnette, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire, in a statement. “This is not only cruel, but also counterproductive for New Hampshire’s over 2,300 prisoners and their families waiting for them to come home.” The ACLU, along with a private law firm, sued in federal court on behalf of a prisoner’s mother and 3-year-old son. They are arguing that the department’s new mail policy — amended on May 1, according to court documents — is unconstitutional. According to an internal memorandum attached to the lawsuit, officials are required to screen out “greeting cards, postcards from particular locations or featuring any type of printed design, picture, or depiction.” Read More. |
