| Revamped Department of Corrections K-9 search program wants to target cell phones next |

LEXINGTON — Sgt. Derek Anderson leads his K-9 partner, Cindy, around boxes and bunks at Lexington Correctional Center, where he and other K-9 handlers have hidden contraband items for her to find. The training area is tucked away in a warehouse in the corner of the prison complex, but Anderson said the bunk setup is similar, if not identical, to housing inside the facility. Cindy, Anderson said with a laugh, is a “terror” for inmates at Lexington and elsewhere who keep illegal or otherwise prohibited items in their cells. Almost as if to prove his point, Cindy successfully alerted soon after and began pawing at a stash of black tar heroin hidden within the boxes. “She scans the bottom of doors. They’ve trained that into her, where she’ll sniff door seams,” Anderson said. “I actually found six or seven pipes one day on one complete unit, and I thought she was going after another one and she went up the door seam and on the door, where the hole is, where the locking mechanism goes in, she alerted. So I called for an assistant. We took the door handle off and wound up finding a Kool-Aid packet and unwrapped it. I thought it was going to be a lot, but it only ended up being 2 grams of marijuana.
