An inmate who was serving a 94-year sentence for beating two juvenile detention center officers in an escape attempt committed suicide in his prison cell, authorities said. David Lee Simmons, 20, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Pendleton Correctional Facility in Indiana after lunch Monday, according to prison officials and Indiana State Police. Simmons was one of four inmates who were convicted of attacking two officers and escaping from the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center in 2001. Prison officials said the Madison County coroner ruled that Simmons committed suicide. The method of death was not mentioned. The Department of Correction and State Police said the investigation was continuing. Simmons was 17 when he and three other inmates escaped from the detention center in Noblesville. At Simmons' trial in July 2003, one inmate testified that Simmons was the leader of the breakout, while another said Simmons kicked and beat a female officer. Simmons was convicted of kidnapping, escape and battery charges. The attack left guard Ann Davidson, 54, of Anderson, with skull fractures, eye injuries, broken bones in her hand, cuts and the loss of some teeth. Another officer suffered less severe injuries. The three other inmates who escaped pleaded guilty to criminal charges. |
