Public employees who seek help after overdosing on illegal narcotics can still lose their jobs, even if they face no jail time under state laws designed to place their well-being over their prosecution. A state Appellate Court this week said a Cumberland County Sheriff's Officer was not protected from sanctions from his employer when he called for help after a heroin overdose. William Burgess, a corrections officer at the county jail, argued that the same rules that protected him from prosecution should protect his job since he was not convicted of any crime. Burgess called 911 for medical assistance on May 15, 2013, after overdosing on heroin at a Vineland hotel, according to court records. Read More. |
