| New York City and Correction Officers Reach Tentative Contract Deal |

The administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Thursday that it had tentatively agreed to a labor contract with New York City’s correction officers’ union that included long-sought protections for jail guards, like provisions to make it easier to prosecute inmates who commit crimes while incarcerated. If the deal is approved by New York’s 7,000 correction officers, all uniformed services in the city would be under contract for the first time since Mr. de Blasio, a Democrat, took office two years ago. The $365 million deal is similar to agreements already ratified by the police and fire unions, providing an 11 percent raise over seven years. The contract was negotiated at a time of major upheaval in the Department of Correction. The de Blasio administration has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in an effort to curtail pervasive brutality and corruption at Rikers Island as well as to impose federally mandated changes to equipment and policy at the jail complex.
