Two escapees from the Washington Ridge Youth Conservation Camp outside Nevada City, Calif., had short-lived freedom Thursday. Rony Estrada and Joshua Pimental, both 18, escaped while raking leaves in front of their dormitory at 10:15 a.m., said Steve Gardner, superintendent of the California Youth Authority camp. They were caught by Nevada County Sheriff's officers about 3:30 p.m. underneath the Purdon Crossing Bridge at the South Yuba River. "We were looking for them and a citizen saw them standing on Lake Vera Road at Rector Road," said Sheriff's Lt. Ron Smith. The resident had heard about the escape, noticed they fit the description and called the sheriff's office. Estrada, of Hollywood, and Pimental, of Modesto, were incarcerated for burglary and car theft and "did not have serious offenses in their backgrounds," Gardner said. Both are wards of the state incarcerated with the California Youth Authority at the camp, which is scheduled to be converted to a California Department of Corrections site for adult offenders. Gardner said there will be no more youth authority wards at the camp by May 1. The wards were raking leaves in front of their dormitory when a camp employee left them alone to attend to other business, Gardner said. They were gone when the employee came out of a nearby building about 10 minutes later. |
