HARRISBURG — State Sen. David Argall wants a study done to determine why overtime spending has increased greatly at the Department of Corrections in recent years even though the number of inmates has declined. Argall, R-29, Tamaqua, plans to introduce a resolution authorizing the study into both overtime costs and staffing shortages at the agency. Overtime spending by the department increased 57 percent between fiscal 2009-10 and fiscal 2013-14. “Conventional wisdom would dictate that a decrease in inmates would result in decrease in spending, but that has not been the case,” Argall said. He wants the study to examine the costs tied with hiring a new employee compared to paying current employees overtime. The study is relevant because the department wants to boost spending by 10 percent, said Argall. Read More. |
