| Former WI DOC officer says proposed bills could improve safety in prisons |

MADISON (WKOW)-- State Democrats are pushing to reform the operations within the Department of Corrections to improve safety. Tony Gunderson spent 13 years as a Department of corrections officer before leaving, partly in response to the working conditions. He says part of the problem is officers are forced to work several overtime shifts in a row, meaning multiple 16-hour days. “We are watching some of the most violent criminals in our state and as we're tired, as we're rundown, it's becoming less safe,” Gunderson said. “We have staff shortages.
