An off-duty corrections officer was killed last Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle after he got out of his car on the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway after a crash, officials said.
Andre Davis, 28, was on his way home to Palmdale from the California State Prison-Los Angeles County in Lancaster.
"The entire institution is in mourning right now," said prison Public Affairs Officer Lt. Ken Lewis. "We had some officers go home when they heard the news because they were in no condition to complete their duties."
The crash occurred just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday on the southbound Antelope Valley Freeway south of Avenue P-8.
Officials said that Davis' 2004 Nissan Maxima rear-ended a 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup truck. The truck was pushed into the median but Davis' sedan was stuck in a traffic lane.
As Davis got out of his car and walked toward the median, he was struck by a third vehicle, killing him instantly.
California Highway Patrol officers shut down the freeway for nearly four hours to investigate the crash.
Davis started with the Department of Corrections in February 1999 and transferred to California State Prison-Los Angeles County in December 1999. He had worked in the prison's administrative segregation unit, which holds inmates who are considered a threat to other inmates or in danger from other inmates.
