A new purpose-built probation centre planned for Maori-owned land in Wainoni should be completed by the end of the year. The Nga Hau E Wha National Marae wants resource consent to build the centre, which will be leased to the Department of Corrections and used as the base for its community correction services in the east of Christchurch. Since the earthquakes damaged its probation centre at 601 Pages Rd the department has been running its community correction services from temporary facilities spread across three locations in the east of the city, including at the marae. It now wants to bring them under one roof and has reached an agreement with Nga Hau E Wha Marae's board of trustees.
