| N.J. Senate passes bill to pay corrections officers attacked by inmates |

TRENTON — The state Senate on Thursday overwhelmingly approved a bill that would create a compensation program for state corrections officers in New Jersey assaulted by inmates in their custody. The bill (S491) would bring the corrections officers' compensation closer in line with state and local police officers hurt in the line of duty. Currently, prison and juvenile detention workers have to apply for worker's compensation when injured on the job, making significantly less than their regular salary. Its passage by a 33-4 vote comes after hundreds of members of the state's corrections officers union staged a mock funeral in front of the Statehouse featuring pallbearers wearing Gov.
