A Houston County, Ala., corrections officer is credited for foiling an escape attempt by three inmates, including one awaiting trial on capital murder charges. Sheriff Lamar Glover said the plot fell apart early Wednesday morning when Officer Alicia Jackson became suspicious after she saw an inmate slide an electrical cord to another prisoner. Jackson alerted another jailer who searched the cell and found that several metal bars on a window had been cut. Glover said so far his deputies have not found the cutting device. He said attempted escape charges were filed against David Phillip Wilson, James William Bailey and Richard Reisz. Wilson awaits trial in the 2004 beating and strangulation death of a 64-year-old man. Bailey is incarcerated for various drug-related offenses and Reisz is serving time for obstructing governmental operation. The sheriff said he doesn't know how the inmates got the items, but he suspects jail trustees who are allowed to leave the facility on a daily basis. |
