LINCOLN — Nearly 40 states and the federal government authorize the collection of medical co-payments from inmates in state prisons or county jails. An attempt to add Nebraska to the list touched off a heated discussion Thursday in the Legislature. Most of the heat was generated by Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, who took up an emotional fight against the bill before debate ended for the day. He said charging any fee that would discourage impoverished inmates from seeking medical help could have life-threatening consequences. Read More. |
