| Peoria County officials seek to expand possible uses for former Hanna City Work Camp |

PEORIA — Eight years after receiving control of the long-vacant Hanna City Work Camp from the state of Illinois, Peoria County officials have struggled with what to do with the facility. That’s partly because of a provision in the legislation that turned it over from the Department of Corrections, necessary to the measure’s original passage. It required that the land be used for a “public purpose” — that is, something governmental. But options there have been limited, county officials said last week as they requested new legislation that would permit them to seek other uses, including economic development initiatives that could return it to the tax rolls. “It’s very limited today — for public purposes or government purposes — and we’ve had some challenges in identifying the best way to do that,” County Administrator Scott Sorrel said Friday at the county’s annual joint legislative breakfast with the city, where he made the formal request to lawmakers including Rep. Mike Unes, R-East Peoria, in whose district the camp sits, for the tweak to its status. Read More. |
