| DOC denies appeal of convicted murderer mistakenly released |

The Florida Department of Corrections has denied the emergency appeal of a convicted murderer who was mistakenly released from state custody and then rearrested two days later. Kenneth Purdy, now 38, has been incarcerated on a felony murder charge since 1995, weeks before he turned 18 years old. His bout of freedom happened after a judge revised his sentence under new guidelines meant to relieve people serving life terms for crimes they committed as juveniles — if they have been rehabilitated. Circuit Judge Mark Blechman said that was true for Purdy, telling him "you've matured dramatically ... which is why I believe you're fit to reenter society," according to a transcript of a hearing in December.
