Proposal would house Arizona prisoners in Mexico |

Arizona lawmakers are exploring the possibility of having a private prison built in Mexico to house illegal immigrants now incarcerated in Arizona. The idea is being promoted as a way to reduce the state's heavy costs in imprisoning upward of 36-hundred illegal immigrants in Arizona prisons who've been convicted of crimes. The vast majority are from Mexico. Opponents question whether the state has the legal authority to move the foreign prisoners to Mexico. In any event, a bill to have the state seek proposals to build such prison has cleared its first hurdle at the Arizona Legislature. |
