De Blasio quadruples down on outsourcing Rikers reform

After an initial $1.7 million consulting stint at Rikers Island, consulting colossus McKinsey will be paid more than four times as much by the de Blasio administration to "accelerate and sustain" a safety plan in city jails, records show.

The Department of Correction submitted a new $7.5 million agreement last week for the consulting firm to continue work on an "anti-violence reform agenda" for the department.

The city hired had hired McKinsey for $1.7 million in 2014 to review procedures and suggest reforms at violence-plagued Rikers. The result was a 14-point agenda announced in March by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte.

"DOC is committed to creating a culture of safety within the city's jails, and extending our current contract with McKinsey is part of that ongoing effort," a spokesman for the agency said in a statement.
