Fewer community work sentences means maintenance not getting done

A downturn in the number of offenders being sentenced to community work in the Gore District Court is having a flow-on effect in the community.

People sentenced to community work carry out maintenance at facilities such as the Gore A&P Showgrounds and Dolamore Park but with less people being sentenced to carry out the work, some is not being done.

Gore District Council parks and reserves manager Ian Soper said some gardening work at Dolamore Park was not being carried out.

"We certainly are getting less help from Her Majesty's helpers," Soper said.

"With gardens there's always things like weeding, always mulching and spreading woodchips and now some of those tasks just don't get done."
