| North Dakota to review justice system, aims to reduce spending on correction and reinvesting in ways that curb recidivism and boost public safety |

BISMARCK – With its jails and prisons overcrowded and incarceration costs on rise, North Dakota launched an effort with a national partner Tuesday aimed at curbing spending on corrections and reinvesting the savings in ways that curb recidivism and boost public safety. State lawmakers approved a comprehensive review of the state’s criminal justice system last year, creating an Incarceration Issues Committee to guide the effort. The governor’s office and judicial branch joined them in asking the U.S. Department of Justice and The Pew Charitable Trusts for support to pursue the Justice Reinvestment Initiative. “North Dakota is by no means behind the curve on this issue. We consider ourselves a leader in reforming our corrections system,” Gov.
