An inmate of the Putnamville Correctional Facility who died of severe pneumonia last week also was infected with MRSA, which complicated his illness, officials said Tuesday. State prison and health officials identified an outbreak at the prison as influenza A subtype H1N1 virus, and said most of the prisoners who have become sick at the prison were otherwise healthy men, prior to showing flu-like symptoms. During a news conference at the Indiana State Police Post across the highway from the prison, the Indiana Department of Correction said the man who died Friday was a 35-year-old Mexican national who had been at the prison since May or June. He also happened to be infected with MRSA, which is a type of staph bacteria that is more resistant to antibiotics. Read More. |
