| President bans the use of solitary confinement for juveniles in federal prison |

BOZEMAN - The president makes sweeping prison reforms this week that will make serving time easier for certain offenders. President Obama's executive action only applies to federal prisons, but the president says he hopes local institutions follow suit. In his executive action, President Obama bans the use of solitary confinement to punish juveniles in federal prison. Another one of President Obama's various changes limits the amount of time adult inmates can be punished to solitary confinement after their first offense. The time used to be a maximum of one year, but has now been reduced to 60 days President Obama says in an op-ed in the Washington Post, "These steps will affect some 10,000 federal prisoners held in solitary confinement - and hopefully serve as a model for state and local corrections systems."
