McALESTER, Okla. — A man accused of kidnapping a woman and flying a drone carrying contraband over the walls at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, Okla., recently was released from custody on his own recognizance. Marquis Gilkey, 30, of Tulsa faces charges of attempting to bring contraband (weapons/drugs) into a penal institution, conspiracy, kidnapping and gang-related offense. According to a law-enforcement affidavit, a woman who often visited the prison was kidnapped in October by Gilkey under the direction of a high-ranking gang member incarcerated at the facility. The affidavit states the woman said Gilkey forced her to buy the drone, to practice flying it and to drive with Gilkey from Tulsa to McAlester, where the drone was used Oct. 26 in an unsuccessful attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison. Oklahoma Department of Corrections officials said the drone appeared to hit the top of a fence and became disabled when it fell to the ground. According to a DOC news release, the device contained two 12-inch hacksaw blades; a cellphone, battery and hands-free device; two packs of Newport cigarettes; two packs of Black & Mild cigars; two tubes of super glue; and bags containing 5.3 ounces of marijuana, 0.8 ounces of methamphetamine and less than 1 gram of heroin.
