POWHATAN – Powhatan Reception and Classification Center is on its 15th straight day of complete lockdown after Virginia Department of Corrections officers and the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office foiled an attempt to smuggle in contraband that included weapons and ammunition hidden inside a basketball, officials confirmed on Friday, Jan. 29. On Thursday, Jan. 14, an intelligence officer at the prison received a tip that individuals were planning to smuggle drugs, cell phones, and weapons into the facility, which is adjacent to the closed Powhatan Correctional Center on the State Farm property, according to Lisa Kinney, director of communications for the Virginia Department of Corrections. Correction officers and Powhatan deputies intercepted two people attempting to enter a job fair being held on the State Farm compound with contraband in their possession, she said. The two were caught apparently attempting to introduce marijuana, tobacco, cell phones, knives, and 9mm round bullets to the facility, Kinney said. The items were concealed inside a basketball.
