| Georgia budget writers consider prison locks and revolving doors |

ATLANTA | State officials asked budget writers Tuesday for money for upgrading locks at the state’s prisons and juvenile facilities as well as 7-percent pay increases to reduce turnover of guards. Nearly half of the guards in the Department of Juvenile Justice, 47 percent, leave in a year’s time. It’s almost as high in the adult prisons of the Department of Corrections at 32 percent. Many of those leave shortly after the state has spent the money for six months of training and law-enforcement certification that leads to higher-paying jobs at local jails. Gov. Nathan Deal recommends adding $29 million to the budget for the Corrections and Juvenile Justice departments.
