A Santa Fe County (N.M.) jail inmate was found dead in his cell early Friday, and fellow inmates are claiming the deceased man took heroin on Thursday, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department. Chris Roybal, 37, was found dead just before 3 a.m. on Friday after a fellow inmate notified an officer that Roybal "normally snores loudly and was too quiet and something may be wrong with him," according to the sheriff's department. "Attempts to revive Chris were made by in-house medical staff without success," a statement from the sheriff's department says. Roybal showed no outward signs of trauma and no drug paraphernalia was found near his dead body, Santa Fe County sheriff's Maj. Ron Madrid said Friday. "Investigators are looking into some inmates' claims that Mr. Roybal may have taken heroin" on Thursday, according to Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano. Madrid said Roybal's cause of death is unknown and sheriff's deputies will likely not be able to determine a cause of death until after his autopsy is completed today in Albuquerque. Madrid added that investigators will search Roybal's jail "pod" or dormitory area for drugs or other contraband, with the assistance of drug-sniffing dogs provided by state Corrections Department. Roybal had been in the Santa Fe County jail since December, when he was arrested on a bench warrant for failing to comply with the conditions of his probation, court records state. Roybal's underlying criminal charges were convictions for 2001 charges of felony shoplifting and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to court records. On Friday, Roybal's former attorney, Sydney West, said Roybal had "a long and documented heroin problem." Assistant district attorney Joseph CampBell, who prosecuted Roybal's case before it was passed to another attorney, added that it was his understanding that the courts had been trying to enroll Roybal into a drug-treatment program. |
