| 14 Alabama prisons to close as part of consolidation |

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama Department of Corrections commissioner Jeff Dunn revealed on Monday that the state plans to close 14 "major" prison facilities as part of a transformation in corrections. The 14 prisons will be replaced by four larger facilities with the end result adding about 2,500 to 3,000 in the system's capacity. Dunn said the plan will help save a system that has been struggling over recent years. Alabama's correction system is one of the most overcrowded and understaffed in the country. "The status quo is unsustainable," Dunn said. "All of those things that I look at as commissioner to tell us how the department is doing are trending in the wrong direction." Read More. |
