| Union reports ‘near-riot’ at Los Lunas prison |

Six armed guards responded to what a union describes as a “near-riot” in a Los Lunas prison last weekend, one day after the New Mexico Corrections Department reduced monthly visitation days for inmates to relieve a prison staffing crisis. According to a news release issued by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents workers at all New Mexico-run prisons and many county jails, inmates at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility began throwing food trays at about 2 p.m. Saturday. A corrections officer fled the room, and a security door locked behind him. Six officers returned, ordering the inmates to go back to their cells and close their doors. The officers, following protocol, threatened to fire gas or use lethal force if the inmates didn’t obey their orders, the news release says. The incident lasted only five minutes, the release says. But it says workers watching surveillance footage saw inmates fashioning masks, and a response team discovered that they had rigged several doors to remain unlocked. Read More. |
