| Senators question prisons director on spending needs |

Senators challenged Department of Correctional Services Director Scott Frakes Wednesday on his request to spend $26 million over three years on a proposal to add community corrections beds in Lincoln. Frakes testified at a budget hearing before the Appropriations Committee, answering questions for more than two hours on his short-term and long-term plans for the department, and on budget issues that ranged from spending on salaries, construction plans and prison crowding solutions. Omaha Sen. Bob Krist, representing concerns of the Department of Correctional Services Special Investigative Committee, wanted to know if the $26 million Frakes was requesting for construction plans would be used to help resolve the prisons' most important and pressing problems.
