Population at the Northumberland County, Penn. Prison has dropped below the 175-inmate capacity for the first time in months. During a prison board meeting last Tuesday, Warden Ralph "Rick" Reish said the population was at 163, but last week shrunk to 151. District Attorney Tony Rosini, impressed by the number, asked Reish what caused the decline, especially since his office has accepted more guilty pleas in the past two months than at any other time in county history. Reish said he believes the county is just working together better now than in the past. Sheriff Charles Berkoski, who ran the meeting in the absence of President Judge Robert B. Sacavage, who was on vacation, said the criminal management meetings have made a difference. Berkoski said Reish began preparing daily reports about inmates which include information about their sentencing. The reports can assist authorities to determine if inmates have served their minimum or maximum sentences, and if and when they are eligible for release. |
