County wants to remain a CCA

Aitkin County Board of Commissioners Chairman Mark Wedel said two of the three options for community corrections are not in the best interest of the county.

Due to the dissolution of the Central Minnesota Community Corrections (CMCC) joint powers agreement between Aitkin, Crow Wing and Morrison counties, Aitkin County now must give notice to the state Department of Corrections as to which direction it will go for services by April 1.

As a Community Corrections Act (CCA) county, Aitkin was able to provide community supervision services and the system was overseen by a local corrections advisory board. Now out of the joint powers agreement with neighboring counties, Aitkin has been attempting to become a standalone CCA, but legislation first must be approved to allow a change in the population (30,000) required to be a CCA.
