Ventura County was added to a class-action lawsuit involving inmates who believe they have been illegally taxed for making phone calls from local jails. Scott Rapkin, a Venice attorney representing plaintiffs in the lawsuit, said Ventura County was added Tuesday to the lawsuit that was filed with the U.S. Central District Court. The local plaintiffs include a man who was formally an inmate in Ventura County Jail, his mother, and a woman who's spouse is an inmate at the Todd Road Jail. The lawsuit also includes Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It was originally filed in November. Global Tel Link, or GTL, a nationwide inmate phone service provider in the local jails, agrees each year to pay a minimum agreed amount back to Ventura County as part of its contract. That agreed amount is 63 percent of the gross revenues for calls made to the main, Todd Road and East County jails and 63 percent of the calls made through the juvenile detention center. Read More. |
