Hampden County sheriff candidates weigh in on addiction center relocation

SPRINGFIELD — Although Hampden County Sheriff Michael Ashe is heavily involved with the relocation of the Western Massachusetts Correctional Addiction Center to Springfield, when he retires after his current term ends at the end of the year, it will be his successor who will take on the program.

Last month, Ashe, the state Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance and developer Jeremy Lederer signed a 10-year lease to convert the former Ring Nursing Home into the new correctional addiction center on Mill Street, in the city's Six Corners neighborhood.

Sheriff candidates Nick Cocchi and Jack Griffin have publicly supported the program and the Mill Street location.
