Louisiana State Penitentiary inmates have donated $1,930 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund for victims of the Asian tsunami, Warden Burl Cain said in a news release. Inmates at the prison, moved by what they saw and read in news reports of the disaster, wrote to the warden requesting permission to donate their organizations' funds for the relief effort, Cain said. The money donated was raised by inmate organizations allowed to sell concessions to Angola visitors and spectators of the Angola Prison Rodeo. The organizations are based on positive social groupings and are aimed at preventing the formation of negative prison gangs, the statement said. The groups have made donations to victims of other disasters, including $6,250 to victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. |
