| Crime rates are down in Montana, but arrests are up – What gives? |

HELENA - While crime rates in Montana are mostly falling, the number of arrests is going the opposite direction, driven by more drug arrests and probation-and-parole violations, a new draft report looking at Montana’s criminal-justice system says. The same report, compiled for a state commission examining whether Montana has too many people behind bars, also says Montana’s jail populations have shot upward at a much faster rate than our neighbors. The report from a national consultant is the first in-depth look at state criminal-justice data for the Montana Sentencing Commission, which starts scrutinizing the data next week in Helena. “I’m hopeful the data will reveal some ways to maybe do business differently, to improve the outcome for offenders, improve public safety and maybe, long-term, save some costs,” said state Corrections Director Mike Batista, a commission member.
