| Increase in community offenders gaining work and living skills |

A record number of offenders serving community work sentences are taking the opportunity to learn work and life skills. The number of offenders taking part in work and living skills programmes increased in 2015 by 3132. A total of 7278 people took part in some form of skills training through the Department of Corrections' work and living scheme in 2015. The department said it involved everyday skills offenders needed to successfully live a life away from crime. Corrections acting district manager for Wairarapa and Manawatu Hati Kaiwai said community-based offenders in the Manawatu were able to participate in a range of work and living skills programmes.
