SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House passed a bill Tuesday that would require the Department of Corrections to reopen the Hardin County Work Camp in Southern Illinois.

The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, received some bipartisan support, including from fellow Southern Illinoisan state Rep. Terri Bryant, R-Murphysboro, who co-sponsored the bill, and state Rep. Reggie Phillips, R-Charleston. It passed on a 69-34 vote, with eight representatives voting “present.”

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner announced the closure of the work camp in June as part of budget cuts that also included the closure of the Illinois State Museum in Springfield and satellite facilities around the state. The governor’s office said at the time that closing the work camp would save $1 million annually and that it would cost $9.8 million to make necessary repairs to keep the camp open.
