| Task force tackles prison overcrowding in MN |

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota has the fifth fastest growing prison population in the country, according to data from the Department of Corrections. This overcrowding has lawmakers like Senator Ron Latz, DFL-St. Louis Park, pushing for change. Thursday, Latz outlined his prison population reform package. This, after an eight-month review with members of the prison population task force. Some of the proposals include funding the Governor's bonding request to create additional beds at Minnesota's correctional facilities. “We have approximately 9,500 spaces in our state prison system. You can see the projections out to 2022 have us at 10,761 persons committed to the department of corrections,” he said. “That leaves a gap of 1,200 persons.
