A prison guard was stabbed early this morning at St. Clair County Correctional Facility.

The stabbing happened about 12:30 a.m., according to the Alabama Department of Corrections. Prisons spokesman Bob Horton said officers at the Springville lockup were called to one of the prison's cell block in response to an altercation between two inmates.

The officer, Horton said, was stabbed while trying to detain the inmates. The officer was treated at the prison's infirmary, and then taken to an offsite medical facility. His injuries aren't life-threatening.

Corrections officers secured the cell block and, as a precaution, put the prison on lockdown. Horton said they aren't releasing the name of the officer or the inmate suspected in the stabbing. It remains under investigation.
