| Napa inmate died after bag of meth leaked inside body, autopsy shows |

An autopsy revealed a Napa County inmate died last month after a plastic bag of methamphetamine he stuffed into his body leaked, killing him almost instantly, law enforcement officials said Tuesday. Christopher Applegarth, 44, was found unresponsive Feb. 7 at the Napa County Department of Corrections. Applegarth had asked cellmates to get help, but correctional officers and on-site medical staff could not revive him, Napa Sheriff’s Capt. Steven Blower said. “Despite the fact that we have medical staff there on duty, this is one of those situations that was out of our control,” Blower said. Coroner’s officials conducted an autopsy and microscopic analysis to determine the Napa man’s death. It was ruled an accident, caused by acute methamphetamine intoxication, the Sheriff’s Office said.
