| CDCR: Condom dispensing program to begin at Tehachapi prison March 21 |

Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation say their condom program will begin at CCI Tehachapi March 21. Under Assembly Bill 966, which took effect in 2014, the CDCR had to develop a five-year-plan to extend the availability of condoms in all state prisons. Sexual contact between inmates is illegal and a high-risk behavior that threatens the health and welfare of the inmate population, CDCR staff and the public, according to a news release. HIV, hepatitis C, and other sexually transmitted infections are prevalent in correctional settings. In fact, one in seven people in the U.S. with HIV pass through the correctional system each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, extending the availability of condoms will help reduce transmission of these infections within CDCR facilities. Read More. |
