| State corrections secretary stresses prison alternatives |

The state Secretary of Corrections John E. Wetzel believes in taking steps to reduce prison populations, and he told about 25 Schuylkill County leaders on Thursday they are making a good move toward that by coordinating programs. “You guys are so far ahead of the curve,” Wetzel said during his keynote speech at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Schuylkill County Interagency Forensic Task Force at the Ramada hotel. Wetzel said keeping people out of prison helps everyone, not just those who are not put behind bars. “The best re-entry program is called no entry,” said Wetzel, who served as warden of the Franklin County Prison for nine years before former Gov. Tom Corbett appointed him to head the Department of Corrections. Gov. Tom Wolf kept him in the position. Wetzel came to the county to celebrate the task force, which brings together professionals from law enforcement, corrections and public health agencies to seek solutions to problems like substance abuse and incarceration of drug users.
