| Elmira prison lockdown likely to last several days |

A lockdown initiated Wednesday at the Elmira Correctional Facility will probably last several days, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Elmira is one of three state prisons locked down in recent days as the result of violence or the discovery of contraband. Department spokesman Thomas Mailey said it typically takes several days to ensure a facility is safe before a lockdown is lifted. "DOCCS has taken sweeping action in order to protect both department staff and inmates at its facilities," Mailey said. "The department ordered a standard lockdown at Elmira Correctional Facility in order to complete an overall frisk of the premises. This action was taken immediately following a violent incident between inmates. "In addition, the department recently discovered contraband at both Orleans and Auburn correctional facilities," he said. "These discoveries prompted a lockdown of a block and frisk at Auburn (Wednesday), as well as a recent facility search at Orleans. DOCCS has absolutely zero tolerance for violence and contraband at our facilities, and we will make sure that any inmate found in violation of department rules or endangering others is held accountable."
