| TAILS gives Clay shelter dogs a chance at forever homes |

GREEN COVE SPRINGS | Pop Tart romped happily with her buddies — all yipping with glee while kicking up sandy soil with their paws while chasing each other in an impromptu canine game of tag inside the fenced play yard at Clay County Animal Care and Control shelter recently. The sweet-natured but rambunctious brindle German shepherd mix was blissfully unaware she was about to begin a journey taking her from the county animal shelter to state prison en route hopefully to freedom in a loving forever home. Pop Tart was among five dogs from the Clay shelter selected March 15 by Pit Sisters, a nonprofit animal rescue group based in Jacksonville, for the Teaching Animals and Inmates Life Skills (TAILS) program. The program pairs shelter dogs with inmates, who train, socialize and care for the animals to ready them for graduation and adoption. Read More. |
