New Jersey Department of Corrections Commissioner Devon Brown does not intend to resign, said DOC spokesman Matt Schuman last Wednesday, one day after corrections officers and area officials repeatedly called for his resignation. Those who spoke at a Town Meeting held last Tuesday to allow officers involved in the Jan. 1 riot at Bayside State Prison to tell their story alleged that Brown has downplayed what happened that night and has not allowed officers to tell the true story of what happened. A "gag order" had prevented them from speaking publicly. Legislators present last Tuesday promised to support officers if there were attempts at retribution or intimidation from DOC. "We're covering your back," said Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew. Officers complained that at a Feb. 3 hearing by the Senate Law, Public Safety and Veterans Affairs Committee, Brown monopolized the hearing and no officers were given an opportunity to speak. The hearing will continue this week, when they have been assured they will be heard. No representative of the Department of Corrections attended the meeting and not one person spoke in defense of what speakers all said was misrepresentation of the Jan. 1 incident. Officers said there were numerous attackers from all directions, operating in what appeared to be a gang-related, planned and organized manner, but only four inmates ended up being charged. The DOC said there was insufficient evidence to charge others. |
