| MDOC tries to avert budget cuts; inmate numbers drop |

Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher is a familiar face at the state Capitol during this legislative session, advocating for a pay raise for his guards and probation officers at the same time lawmakers' initial proposal for the agency is to cut its budget by $19 million. "My people are the most underpaid correctional officers in the country," Fisher said. "We've got to do something about that. We have a 47 percent turnover rate. From day one, my priority was to get these people a pay raise." The Senate Appropriations Committee's recommended cut for MDOC's upcoming budget year, which begins July 1, includes the 1.5 percent reduction ordered by Gov.
